For the last few months, I've been keeping a secret that Zapier is finally forcing me to reveal. So here's the truth: Building AI agents has become so easy that even I can do it. A few weeks ago, Zapier noticed our work and asked us to feature it on their blog. Slate uses it on the marketing, strategy and sales side to launch initiatives that would otherwise be stuck in the planning phase -- probably forever. I'm incredibly proud of the results we've generated so far. And the best part is, it's still insanely early. AI isn’t replacing support. It’s scaling the need for it. In college, I had a professor who was obsessed with Toyota. I was studying industrial engineering at the time (lots of statistical process control, failure rates, classic IE stuff) Toyota kept it simple: sample a few parts at every step. If they passed, keep going. If not, stop the line and fix it. This approach, called “Jidoka”, empowered employees to halt the line at the first sign of a defect. It’s also how they built some of the most reliable cars on the planet. That same principle might be exactly what AI agents need if we want to trust them at scale. We talk about “human in the loop” as the safety net. That’s fine if you’re running a few dozen workflows. But at Zapier-scale (millions of tasks run every day) it doesn’t hold up. That’s why we’ll need something better, across the industry. Something like Toyota’s approach. Statistical process control, but for AI. Because as AI moves deeper into operations, everything starts to feel like support. - Broken workflow? Support issue - Agent gives the wrong answer? Support’s problem - Bad output that nobody catches? EVERYONE’s problem Quality control isn’t just part of the job. It IS the job.
